Ministry of Agriculture Encourages Farmers to Apply for myGAP Improving Durian Export Competitiveness

myGAP certification was introduced by the Malaysian Ministry of Agriculture in 2002, with the aim of promoting safe and high-quality agricultural products. For durian growers, certification not only improves product quality and safety, but also increases market competitiveness, especially in the export market. Growers may also obtain government subsidies and consultation support to improve farm management and environmental protection.

Jabatan Pertanian Malaysia, through its Crop Industry Development Division, encourages local durian growers to apply for myGAP certification and become part of the official recognition system, especially high-quality durian producers targeting the Chinese market.

myGAP Can Increase Export Competitiveness

The department pointed out that China has strict requirements for imported crops. Imported goods must pass port inspection, while myGAP is a form of recognised certification. Growers who have passed myGAP certification are clearly guided in terms of pesticide residue and food safety standards, meeting the safety consumption level required by China.

Growers may apply for myGAP certification free of charge. The benefits include improving the quality and safety of local agricultural products, increasing market competitiveness, especially in the export market. Growers may also obtain government subsidies and consultation support to improve farm management and environmental protection.

myGAP is open to all farmers in Malaysia. Those who wish to apply only need to submit an application through the local agricultural office or related agricultural institutions. Once certification is obtained, it can strengthen the brand image and increase consumer confidence, whether in terms of technology, economy, or market acceptance.

Currently, the myGAP application requirements for durian growers are more relaxed. Farmers only need at least 10 durian trees and some basic management capacity. This is also because related departments and industry groups are actively encouraging more durian growers to apply, in order to promote the Chinese and Middle Eastern markets and support the durian export industry.

Certification Valid for 2 Years After Passing Evaluation

myGAP certification was promoted in 2002 and is currently a fully free-of-charge, high-quality government certification. myGAP members may purchase fertilisers at special prices and receive soil sampling and testing services as well as pest and disease consultation, simple applications for agricultural machinery and equipment, and other related support.

The myGAP application process can be carried out through the local agriculture department or online. Applicants need to first provide identity documents, land ownership or lease documents, farm plans, and records of pesticide and fertiliser use. Officers will then conduct site inspections and sampling tests.

If the application is approved, the grower will receive myGAP certification within about 3 to 4 months. After passing the evaluation, the certification is valid for 2 years and must be renewed after expiry.

Certification requirements include:

  • Farm management records
  • Proper use of fertilisers and pesticides
  • Ensuring worker safety and welfare
  • Protecting the environment
  • Product traceability

In addition to myGAP, there are also certification types such as myOrganic. These certifications can help growers improve production standards. The government also provides various subsidy and incentive measures to encourage farmers to improve production standards.

Overall, myGAP certification is an important policy promoted by the Malaysian government to support agricultural modernisation and standardised production, and it is worthy of active participation by durian growers.
