How to Effectively Control Red Spider Mites?
Two-spotted spider mites, also known as red spider mites, are small in size and oval in shape. Their colour can range from green to red, depending on their developmental stage and environmental conditions. They prefer dry and warm environments, reproduce rapidly, and once an infestation occurs, they can seriously affect plant health and growth.
Introduction to Red Spider Mites
The two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) is commonly known as red spider mite. It usually hides on the underside of leaves and uses its piercing-sucking mouthparts to suck plant sap.
This causes yellow spots to appear on the leaves and gradually leads to leaf colour changes. When the damage becomes more severe, the leaves may turn yellow and dry up. In serious cases, the whole plant’s health and growth can be affected.
The severity of red spider mite damage generally appears as leaf yellowing in mild cases, leaf wilting in moderate cases, and growth stagnation in severe cases.
Application Guide for Miticides
The key to effectively controlling red spider mites is to intervene at the most vulnerable stage of their life cycle. The following points are recommended:
Early detection: Look for small spots, yellowing, or browning signs on the leaves.
Consistent protection: Once signs of infestation appear, apply control measures immediately.
Life cycle timing: Under warm conditions, the full life cycle of red spider mites can be completed within 7 to 14 days. Therefore, repeated applications may be needed every 7 to 10 days during severe infestations to prevent newly hatched mites from continuing to spread.
Thorough spray coverage: Ensure the spray reaches all parts of the plant, especially the underside of leaves.
Rotate products with different modes of action to delay resistance development.
Conduct regular inspections and monitoring.
Appropriate pruning can also help improve pest management.
Fenpyroximate 5SC is a miticide under the mitochondrial electron transport inhibitor category. It inhibits the energy metabolism of mites, causing them to stop feeding and eventually die.
This miticide is effective against red spider mite eggs, young mites, and adult mites. It has fast-acting control and high activity, providing rapid suppression after application. Its longest residual effect can reach up to 4 weeks.
Farmers’ Feedback
According to feedback from Mr. Lim, a durian farmer from Gua Musang, the use of Fenpyroximate 5SC in his durian orchard achieved around 70% control of red spider mites.
He shared that this product not only works quickly, but also provides a certain level of lasting protection after application, helping to stabilise pest control results.
The recommended dosage for this miticide from Advansia is 20ml mixed with 20 litres of clean water, sprayed evenly on the crop.
